Cartoons
One of Brian’s sidelines is as a journalist, a bug he caught on a weekly student newspaper. For some 30 years he wrote the town planning column in the Architects’ Journal (see Guidance) and to lighten the mood he often got the AJ to commission cartoons from Louis Hellman MBE.
Louis is the star architectural cartoonist with a collection in the V&A and he also provides the cover cartoon for Planning in London magazine which has been published and edited by Brian and his partners Paul Finch and Lee Mallett since 1992.
Brian organised an exhibition of Louis’ cartoons in the narthex of St Mark’s North Audley Street, Mayfair – a project BWCP was working on at the time, courtesy of his client George Hammer.
This collection of cartoons, nearly all by Louis Hellman, provides a selection of those commissioned by Brian.
Brian has undertaken to donate his extensive collection of original Hellman cartoons to join the others at the V&A/RIBA collection.
